Martin and Georg are two orphans growing up under the protection of monks at a monastery. Martin becomes a soldier and fights for his country, while Georg dedicates his life to the church. Returning to the town after years of fighting senseless wars, Martin receives a warm reception from Georg who has become the leader of the Abbey. Martin falls in love with the headman’s daughter, a marriage which turns him into an outcast. His friendship with Georg is deeply tested by this marriage and finally turns into hatred.
In times of change, the church tries to repress all types of reformation. When the Archbishop becomes convinced that Georg is no longer in charge of his congregation or the town, there is no stopping the Holy Inquisition from taking control of events.
In these violent times no one is safe from the arbitrary ‘justice’ dispensed by the inquisition in the name of God. Martin is forced to fight against his best friend and a corrupt church for the lives of his wife and son. A Fight which seems hopeless from the start…
The Shadow of the Sword is a film about friendship, courage and faith set in the violent times of the inquisition.
